Since our founding in 1953 by Dr. Paul Janssen, and the discovery of
HALDOL® (haloperidol) in 1958, Janssen has been firmly grounded
in science and the search for innovation. That focus and commitment
are nurtured by a unique blend of "opposites" - a lean,
entrepreneurial size and organization that allow Janssen to be nimble
and opportunistic - backed by the significant resources of Johnson &
Johnson, our parent company and the world's most comprehensive
manufacturer of healthcare products. This combination has led to a
rich history of success.
The drug discovery organization of Johnson & Johnson,
Johnson
& Johnson Pharmaceutical Research & Development, L.L.C.,
(J&JPRD), combines the former Janssen Research Foundation and
R.W. Johnson Pharmaceutical Research Institute (PRI). Together they
are credited with synthesizing more than 84,000 new chemical
compounds — leading to the introduction of more than 75 medications
in 150 countries that treat disabling or life-threatening conditions
such as cancer, mental illness and intractable pain. Four of those
medications are now included on the
World
Health Organization's Essential Drug List.
These drugs represented "firsts" in their class at the time they were
introduced and have blazed the trail for other products that have
followed.
J&JPRD is interested in all areas of mental health, including
schizophrenia and other psychotic disorders, bipolar disorders,
depressive disorders, anxiety spectrum disorders, substance abuse and
addiction, and Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD).
Our scientific efforts and ongoing search for innovation have
led to many publications in prominent medical journals, to hundreds of
scientific presentations at professional medical meetings, as well as to
continued product development and subsequent regulatory filings. See
News Center for recent
announcements regarding these efforts.
