Our Health for Humanity 2025 goals
Our citizenship and sustainability approach is linked to our vision of a world where a healthy mind, body and environment are within reach for everyone, everywhere.
Our UN SDG 2020 Commitment complements our Health for Humanity 2025 Goals, which focus our citizenship and sustainability efforts where we believe Johnson & Johnson can achieve the greatest impact.
Our environmental goals
We care for the health of our planet because human health depends on it:
- We are working to become more energy-, carbon- and water-efficient across our operations, products and supply chain.
- We uphold strong governance and standards to ensure consistency throughout the system and product lifecycles of the Johnson & Johnson Family of Companies.
- We are developing more sustainable products that will ultimately create a healthier planet.
We will be using 100% renewable electricity in Europe for Johnson & Johnson sites by 2023
Johnson & Johnson has signed two new wind and one solar virtual power purchase agreements (VPPAs) in Europe, which will provide 270,000 megawatt hours (MWh) of clean power each year (equivalent to cutting out 41,000 cars, or 82,000 homes). 30 sites across eight European countries are involved, meaning we’ll be 100% renewable in Europe by 2023.
We are a Climate A List company
In 2021, Johnson & Johnson continued to drive ambitious climate action. We made significant progress toward our Health for Humanity climate goals and increased our work with suppliers to help them measure and manage climate risks and opportunities related to their work with Johnson & Johnson. This is why J&J has again been recognised by the global environmental non-profit CDP with two of their highest accolades.
For the fourth year in a row, J&J has been placed on the prestigious CDP “A List” for leadership in Climate Action – and this is the fifth year in a row we have been recognised on CDP’s “Supplier Engagement Leaderboard.”
This recognition reflects the long-term commitment from Johnson & Johnson and from our supplier community to create more transparent dialogue, collaboration and the development of immediate actions to help us address our collective climate change risk.
J&J has a longstanding commitment to environmental health, including two decades of setting and achieving carbon reduction goals. Our current Health for Humanity climate goals are our most ambitious yet and include accelerating our transition to renewable electricity and carbon neutrality in our global operations and reducing our upstream carbon emissions.
New Deal for Europe
In 2019, Kris Sterkens, Company Group Chairman of Janssen, was one of the 380 CEOs in 24 European countries to endorse the CEO Call to Action for a New Deal for Europe: a Europe that has sustainability, climate action and inclusiveness at its core.
At Janssen, we are embracing ‘green chemistry’ principles, not only in our own laboratories but also through industry leadership. We evaluate our products’ environmental footprint, including the energy, materials and water used during the product lifecycle. We challenge our product development teams to explore new approaches, such as using renewable raw materials, reducing complexity in drug synthesis and using more environmentally friendly chemicals and processes. Most of all, we focus on designing and manufacturing the most sustainable products and health solutions to create a healthy future for us all.
Energy and emissions
Our latest climate commitments:
• By 2025, to source 100% of our electricity needs from renewable sources
• By 2030, to achieve carbon neutrality for our operations, going beyond our science-based target to reduce absolute Scope 1 and 2 emissions by 60% from 2016 levels
• By 2030, to reduce absolute upstream Scope 3 emissions by 20% from 2016 levels
We continue to advance energy efficiency and GHG emission-reduction initiatives across our global manufacturing operations and supply chain. See below for examples of how we’re achieving this.
Geothermal energy at the Janssen Beerse campus
We’re continually focusing on innovative solutions and sustainable ways of minimising our impact on the environment.
Janssen’s campus in Beerse, Belgium, uses the most energy of all Johnson & Johnson sites worldwide, with its electricity consumption currently equalling that of 38,000 homes. In 2019, we starting drilling two geothermal energy wells, each around 2.4 kilometres deep, which will bring hot water up from the ground. When completed, this renewably-sourced hot water will substantially reduce the site’s energy needs and CO2 emissions.

The project was made possible through financial support from the European Regional Development Fund (€1.5 million), the Innovation and Enterprise Agency (€2 million) and the Flemish Energy Agency (€4 million).
LEED certification in Ireland
The Janssen Sciences Ireland campus in Cork, dedicated to biologics manufacturing and testing, achieved LEED (Leadership in Energy & Environmental Design) silver certification in 2019. LEED green building features at Cork include:
• Charging stations for up to 22 electric cars
• Covered bicycle parking
• Open space for protecting natural vegetation
• Adjustable sun shades on each building level that reduce solar glare and heat gain within the building
• Two wind turbines that provide renewable electricity for approximately 50% of the site’s annual electricity usage
Windpower in Belgium
We have also installed a windmill at our largest chemical production site in Geel, Belgium. The windmill has a capacity of 3.4 mw of electricity production and is expected to provide up to 15% of Geel’s electricity consumption.
Health for Humanity 2020 climate goals
We set ourselves the target of 30% electricity from renewable sources, and we are on track to exceed our goal of reducing Scope 1 and 2 GHG emissions by 32%. More about our work to improve environmental sustainability is found at Health for Humanity.
Changing the way we work: We Sustain
We Sustain is a global network of like-minded employee ambassadors, passionate about fulfilling our commitment to environmental stewardship. The idea is to help make the communities in which we live, work and play healthier places.
We Sustain local teams spread the word and inspire other employees to adopt positive sustainable behaviour. We Sustain teams set annual targets related to participation and engagement via volunteerism, awareness and educational campaigns.
“Thousands of non-recyclable marketing materials were being destroyed on a regular basis, incurring significant environmental consequences, as well as financial storage and destruction fees. Through optimising the volume of marketing materials ordered and discontinuing polluting plastic laminate – replacing it with biodegradable laminate – we will be reducing carbon emissions, saving water and limiting plastic pollution.”
